How this calculator works

The starting balance grows at the entered nominal annual return compounded monthly. Contributions enter at each month-end. The result separates contributed money from growth. Your entered employer contribution is added to your own contribution each month.

Worked example

With 1,000 already saved, a 100 monthly personal contribution, a 50 monthly employer contribution and zero assumed return, the balance after 12 months is 2,800.

Assumptions and limits

Assumes a constant nonnegative return and unchanged contributions. Excludes inflation, taxes, fees and market variability; projected growth is not guaranteed. This scenario excludes statutory contribution caps, eligibility, vesting and plan-specific rules; it does not calculate a legally permitted contribution or a tax benefit.

How to choose your inputs

Use the current plan balance and actual monthly dollar contributions from payroll and the employer. If your plan states a match formula, determine the resulting employer dollar amount from your plan information before entering it; this form does not calculate the match from salary. Ask the plan administrator about eligibility and ownership of employer contributions.

How to interpret your result

Compare how much of the projected balance comes from contributions versus assumed growth, then test a lower return or smaller employer contribution. The displayed balance does not establish a permitted contribution, vested amount or after-tax retirement income. A contribution scenario can exceed plan or statutory rules even when its accumulation arithmetic is valid.
