2026 HSA Growth and Tax Savings Calculator

Explore HSA growth and the federal income tax savings from personal contributions you independently confirm are deductible. This US federal 2026 illustration does not determine HSA eligibility or your contribution allowance.

Tax scope: United States — federal, 2026; USD

Only US federal 2026 assumptions are supported, in USD. Canadian, state and local tax rules are not available. Currency is not a tax jurisdiction. Multi-year projections keep the entered assumptions fixed; they do not forecast future tax law.

How this calculator works

The effective annual return becomes a monthly rate: (1 + return / 100)^(1 / 12) − 1. One twelfth of the annual personal contribution is deposited at each month end. Annual federal income tax savings equal the deductible personal contribution times your marginal federal rate. Savings remain outside the HSA, uninvested, and are not added to its projected balance.

Worked example

At 0% return, a 1,000 starting balance plus 2,400 of personal contributions over one year gives a 3,400 HSA balance. At a 22% marginal federal rate, the separate tax savings are 528, making the net personal contribution cost 1,872.

Assumptions and limits

USD; US federal 2026 assumptions held constant over the projection. IRS 2026 base limits are 4,400 self-only and 8,750 family, with a separate 1,000 age-55 catch-up when eligible. The form ceiling of 9,750 is only the highest illustrated personal maximum, not your allowance. Employer and cafeteria-plan payroll contributions are excluded from these personal deduction inputs. Confirm coverage, age, other contributions and partial-year rules separately. No state or payroll tax savings, medical withdrawals, penalties, inflation or future-law changes are modeled. Qualified medical distributions are assumed; no tax-free withdrawal eligibility is established.

How to choose your inputs

Enter your HSA balance, annual deductible personal contribution, effective annual investment return, years and marginal federal income tax rate. This US federal 2026 model uses USD and excludes employer contributions. Confirm your available contribution room independently: the 2026 limits are $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, plus an eligible $1,000 catch-up at age 55. Employer contributions and other contributions use that room; coverage, eligible months, Medicare enrollment and other rules can reduce it. The input ceiling does not establish eligibility.

How to interpret your result

Annual contributions become twelve equal month-end deposits, with the monthly return derived from the effective annual return. The balance assumes no withdrawals or separate fees and eventual use for qualified medical expenses. Estimated annual income tax savings equal the personal contribution times your entered marginal rate; cumulative savings remain outside the HSA, uninvested, and are excluded from its ending balance. Payroll and state taxes are excluded. Future balances are scenarios with fixed contributions and returns; they do not project later tax law or contribution limits.
