How this calculator works

A nominal annual percentage is divided by 12 for the monthly rate. The payment amortizes principal over the entered term; at 0%, payment is principal divided by months. Total interest is scheduled payments minus principal; total cost adds upfront cash fees.

Worked example

A 10,000 personal loan at 6% nominal annual interest over 36 months pays about 304.22 monthly and 951.90 total interest. With 100 in upfront cash fees, total cost is about 11,051.90.

Assumptions and limits

Assumes equal monthly payments, a constant rate and full amortization. Actual payment rounding and lender conventions can differ. No approval, tax deduction or lender rate is promised. The rate is nominal interest, not a fee-inclusive APR. Deducted or financed origination fees are not modeled as cash fees, and fees do not change the displayed payment.

How to choose your inputs

Read the offer for the nominal interest rate, amount actually financed and repayment months. Enter only fees paid separately in cash in the cash-fee field. When a lender quotes APR alone or deducts origination fees from proceeds, ask for the interest rate and disbursement breakdown before treating the form as a match for that offer.

How to interpret your result

Compare the payment with monthly cash available and the total cost with the amount borrowed. Fees can make two equal-rate offers cost different amounts even when payments match. A lower payment achieved by lengthening the term changes the repayment burden rather than proving the loan is cheaper; compare a second term before choosing.
