How this calculator works

Required balance equals annual income need divided by the entered annual withdrawal percentage expressed as a decimal. The calculator does not select a withdrawal rate for you.

Worked example

An annual income need of 40,000 divided by a user-selected withdrawal assumption of 4% produces a target balance of 1,000,000.

Assumptions and limits

A chosen withdrawal percentage does not guarantee sustainability. This target does not model investment returns, inflation, taxes, fees, a retirement horizon or sequence-of-returns risk. A zero withdrawal percentage is undefined.

How to choose your inputs

Enter annual income you expect savings to provide after considering other income separately. Choose a withdrawal percentage as an assumption to test, not as a rate certified safe by the tool. Keep the spending target and the planned retirement date on the same purchasing-power basis when comparing with accumulated savings.

How to interpret your result

The target is annual need divided by your chosen percentage; it does not estimate investment returns or a retirement duration. A smaller percentage raises the target mechanically without proving that it is adequate. Compare multiple assumptions and connect the target to a savings plan, then review inflation and withdrawal risk separately.
