How this calculator works

Simulate remaining payments on the current loan. Re-amortize the remaining principal at the new rate and term, add refinancing fees paid in cash, and compare payment reduction with total remaining cost.

Worked example

A remaining 6,000 auto loan at 0% paid at 500 monthly finishes in 12 months. Refinancing at 0% over 24 months lowers the payment to 250; 100 in cash fees makes the replacement cost 6,100 instead of 6,000.

Assumptions and limits

Excludes title charges unless entered as cash fees, prepayment penalties, financed fees, vehicle depreciation and refinance eligibility. A longer term can lower the payment and increase total cost. No total savings are reported if the current loan remains unpaid after 600 months.

How to choose your inputs

Use the current vehicle-loan balance and payment, not the vehicle’s original price or all payments already made. Enter the replacement offer’s fixed rate, months and separately paid fees. Compare those terms with an actual payoff quote and check whether the vehicle’s value or age restricts the offer outside this calculation.

How to interpret your result

A longer replacement term can reduce payment while increasing remaining cost and keeping the vehicle financed longer. Compare the modeled cost change with the expected period you will keep the car; the tool does not price a future sale or depreciation. Past interest is already paid and should not be counted as a future refinancing saving.
